The Hilltoppers had two hits through five innings, and when they made decent contact, the ball was either hit right at Kirtland defenders or was held up by a consistently strong breeze. The Hilltoppers were coming of a 10 0 win over South on Wednesday, but the hits didn't carry over to Thursday, at least not right away.
"I thought we would have carried some momentum from yesterday," Long said. "This team tends to step up for certain teams. Kirtland is in a smaller division, but those guys can hit. We can't take any team lightly. It's a baseball game, and that's why you go out there and play."
Mason Bender went 6 1/3 innings for Chardon, and all four of Kirtland's runs were unearned. The senior also went 2 for 4 as the leadoff batter. Steve Ward got the final two outs to get the save.
"Mason isn't one of those overpowering pitchers," Long said. "He's about 5 foot 10, maybe 140 pounds. He knows what his job is. He's got to throw strikes and let his defense make plays behind him. Unfortunately, we weren't there for him all game, but he's a tough kid. That showed today."
Kirtland fell to 4 4 on the season. The young Hornets only one senior was in the starting lineup saw plenty to build on going forward. They are 4 0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division.
